Transform Your Skin with Albina's Holistic Wellness

Janet Walker Season 4 Episode 3

When esthetician Albina Mastrangelo moved from sun-drenched southern Italy to frigid Canada, she never anticipated that the climate shock and cultural adjustment would trigger devastating cystic acne that no commercial or prescription product could fix. Her breaking point? The moment her boyfriend couldn't find a clear spot on her face to kiss.

That heartbreaking moment launched Albina on a mission to create her own solution. Despite lacking formal chemistry training, she researched natural ingredients like chamomile, tea tree, and specialized compounds that fight inflammation. But formulating the recipe was just the beginning—she faced rejection from countless labs unwilling to produce small batches until a chance connection with a chemist who had fond memories of Italy opened the door to creating her first product.

The transformation of Albina's skin became the foundation for what is now an extensive natural skincare line featuring innovative delivery systems that ensure potent ingredients penetrate deeply. What makes her approach special is her holistic philosophy that beautiful skin requires more than topical treatments. Throughout our conversation, she shares practical wisdom about sleep routines, stress management, and nutrition's profound impact on skin health—from omega-3 rich foods that reduce inflammation to antioxidant-packed berries that protect against premature aging.

Whether you're struggling with problematic skin or simply want to maintain a healthy glow as you age, Albina's journey from personal crisis to skincare success offers both inspiration and practical solutions. Discover her natural approach to skincare that addresses both surface concerns and the deeper factors that influence your skin's appearance at www.albina.ca.

Thank you for having me on your podcast. I sincerely appreciate your visit and I'm excited to support your listener in any way I can.

Janet Walker:

Wonderful, I can. Wonderful, I detect an accent. Where are you from originally?

Albina Mastrangelo:

I'm from Italy, the south part of Italy, calabria, and I've been here about, I will say, 30 years. That's a long time. I love Italy because I grew up there, but I also love Canada because it's a wonderful region.

Janet Walker:

Albina, you've been in the skincare industry for decades and your product line came about through your own personal and amazing story that I would love to share with our listeners. Tell us about why you started a journey to create a solution for your own problematic skin. Okay, yes, absolutely.

Albina Mastrangelo:

When I arrived in Canada the first time from Italy, I was impressed with the size of this country. I remember my town. It's so much more tiny and we have everything close by and here you need a car to go everywhere. And when I looked around I thought, wow, this is going to be great. Going to be great. I start to embrace the big dreams and maybe building a life full of opportunity. And I didn't realize that adjusting to such a different place than back home was actually full of challenges At the time. I just got married, I was trying to learn a new language, I was adapting to a new way of living, new people, even different food compared to the small town where I come from, and I was adjusting to a different climate. I was so cold at the time because I arrived, I believe, in I think it was about October, November, so it was the core of the winter.

Janet Walker:

So very different from that Mediterranean climate you were used to?

Albina Mastrangelo:

Oh, absolutely Very different.

Albina Mastrangelo:

And I remember when I arrived I didn't even have the proper clothes or the proper shoes, and then, when I started to feel the freezing cold, the first thing I did I went shopping, and it was a good excuse to buy new clothes.

Albina Mastrangelo:

But having said that, all those factors I think know stress can affect your body, and the largest part of our body is your skin. So I started to experience cystic acne and it wasn't just a cosmetic issue. It eventually became a serious concern. Eventually became a serious concern and my acne became so inflamed and so painful it was getting worse day by day and was not just affecting my appearance, because at the time I was already an esthetician was affecting me also on a business level, and I started to look for answers. In fact, I even consulted my own doctor, which he sent me to a dermatologist and he gave me some strong medication which they were affecting my digestive system, and he sent me to some clinic to have some injection specifically into my skin to try to bring the inflammation down. But honestly, janet, whatever I was doing was helping me for a bit, but then the acne was starting again and was quite intense. That affected me even on a personal level.

Janet Walker:

Was there any one defining moment where you said, okay, that's it, I have to find a solution.

Albina Mastrangelo:

Actually, yes, janet. It's funny that you asked me this question because it was a moment that gave me a strong push to make a change for my and was on a personal level. I remember one day I was with my boyfriend at the time, which then became my fiancé, and he pointed out that he couldn't even kiss me because I could not find a single clear spot on my face to give me a kiss, and that devastated me. I felt sad. I felt defeated. I was getting very anxious about this because it also affected my work as a specialist. It was causing anxiety. I was there to help clients to achieve a beautiful, healthy skin, and instead I was struggling with my own skin. And how will I be perceived by my clients? Would they trust my expertise if my own skin was in crisis?

Janet Walker:

You know what I mean, I understand what you're saying. You know there's the saying physician heal thyself. So your clients could be thinking well, how are you going to make my skin clear if you can't even make your own skin clear?

Albina Mastrangelo:

Exactly that's how I felt. I was losing my confidence and my trust in myself, and at one point I could not take this anymore because it was affecting me on so many levels. It was affecting my personal relationship and my personal self-confidence with my life and my work, and at that moment I decided that it was time to take this matter into my own hands.

Janet Walker:

So then, with your background as an esthetician, but without a formal education in science or chemistry, you embarked on a journey to create a solution for yourself, because there wasn't one that existed either prescription or non-prescription on the shelf. Is that right?

Albina Mastrangelo:

Yes, exactly. I knew I had to take control and I was trying to figure out what to do because medication were not working for me, products over the counter were not working for me, so I started to do my own research. I said there must be a solution, because I am an esthetician and I was always proud to be an esthetician. I went to school, I learned what to do and how to help people with concern like my own, and I was using even professional products on the market and I was not getting the results. So I said something needs to take charge of this situation and I need to be the person in command to find the solution. So I started to spend countless hours in libraries and even online researching active ingredients that could truly target cystic acne.

Albina Mastrangelo:

So about how many years ago? I was at the time, testing even a homemade recipe and I was experimenting formulation on my own and I'm not a chemist, but I have the insight within myself to try to find a solution and a winning recipe. I was trying to pick up even certain ingredients from Eastern market to find the right formulation to create recipe, but I didn't have a complete, all the complete resource to bring it to the right recipe and at one moment I put a formulation together and I knew I had the right recipe. I just need the right chemist to put it together so I can bring it to life.

Janet Walker:

So you had told me the story about how you actually found your chemist and how you were pretty close to the end of your rope for that part of the process. So share that story with us. I think people will enjoy hearing it.

Albina Mastrangelo:

Yeah, it was kind of intense for me because I was reaching out labs that chemists will request in order to create a formulation. In fact, when I was calling them, the first question they will ask me is how many? And I will say I just need this recipe to have done for my skin so I can use for myself and I can clear up my acne. And they will just stop, listen and then say to me again we needed to know how many, because we only create a large batch order for our clientele and if you cannot buy that, we cannot provide you with the formulation, even though you have the recipe in your hands.

Janet Walker:

So here, after all of that time doing research, the library I'm sure internet was minimal at that time internet information you finally have what you think is the thing that's going to help you and no one wants to make it because you can't order, say, a thousand or 10,000 bottles.

Albina Mastrangelo:

Exactly. I thought I exhausted all my options because I spend so much time reading books, calling even some people in Italy that I know they have a very well background in chemistry and they will recommend me herbs that I can pick up from markets and just ground those herbs and create the right recipe. But I still needed the chemist to produce in the right lab. And when everybody were hanging up on me, I felt that my hope was going down the drain. And I remember I had one name still to call on the list. I remember it was about 5 pm that afternoon and I thought, okay, let me call the last person on the list and, god willing, maybe I should do a little prayer before I call this person, because I'm really hoping that he will listen to my request and he will be kind enough to produce a small batch that I can use for my skin. So here I was, making my last call and he was listening without interrupting me and without asking me the question how many units do you need for this recipe? And I was talking and telling him please do not hang up on me, listen to my story and please see if you can find in your heart a way to help me and he was quiet and only once he say where are you from?

Albina Mastrangelo:

Your accent remind me of my girlfriend, many, many years ago when I visit Rome, and she was wonderful. When I visited Rome and she was wonderful, she showed me Rome and she showed me all these beautiful places and I remember that, like it was today. What a beautiful place. I would love to talk to you about it. Why don't you come one day and you can tell me more about Italy and all the beautiful place? That will bring me back to my past and to the beautiful woman that I met in Italy. Wow, yes, and that, honestly, janet, was my opening to have this dream come true and have my recipe come to life.

Janet Walker:

So, here in the middle of all of this science was love. Love that he had from his past is what opened the door, opened his heart to actually manufacture a small batch that allowed you to produce your first product, exactly exactly. What an amazing story.

Albina Mastrangelo:

Yeah, I was so grateful and excited and I was actually looking forward to meet this person because I love Italy and I travel in Rome and I know that Rome has so many beautiful places and I was looking forward to talk to him also about Calabria and maybe get some help for my skin and get this recipe alive that I can help myself and I can get the confidence and I can get my boyfriend to look at my skin in a way that he can just kiss me and love me just as I am.

Janet Walker:

So how was that first meeting with that chemist, and was he someone who became a part of your ongoing journey to produce these products?

Albina Mastrangelo:

Yes, that was such a great moment for me. When I reached the lab, the secretary looked at me almost in a weird way because this particular chemist he deals with a very I just want to say he deals with very high end products and she looked at me like who are you that can enter his conference room without the fee that everybody pays? Because, honestly, I found out later that you have to pay $500 just to enter his conference room and be able to speak to this chemist. And when she ushered me into this meeting room, I noticed this man at the end of this long solid wood table that dominated the room like was an authority space. That made me feel almost shy and made me feel like I stepped into a world far beyond my own, if you know what I mean.

Albina Mastrangelo:

I was a newcomer to the country and I felt like I was thrown into this unfamiliar setting. And this man wastes no time and he points out to sit at the end of the other table and he starts to ask me questions about Italy and I was kind of shy because my English was still raw and it was actually unpolished. But I did my best length of the table and he came right where I was sitting and he stood up in front of me and looked at my face and he was analyzing my skin. I felt like his eyes looking at me, almost disgusted and blurt out what's wrong with your face. That looks terrible, wow.

Albina Mastrangelo:

And in that moment, without hesitation, janet, I responded yeah, that's exactly why I need this recipe to be made and I need the help. And if you can help me to make this recipe, I know in my gut that this recipe will be the solution for my skin. He took the paper off my hands because I was holding the recipe in my hands, and he started to look at this recipe carefully, this recipe carefully, and after a couple moments, he nodded and he said this is an intense but an interesting recipe and, yes, can be done. I'm going to make a small batch for you and even add a few additional active ingredients and let's get your skin cleared up. You are a beautiful girl and that looks terrible on you. You need to get your skin back. I'm going to help you with that, just like I will do that for that girlfriend in Italy.

Janet Walker:

Wow, wow, that's amazing. That's almost like divine intervention. You know someone being put in your path that cared for you, cared for you as a person, and it started a skin product empire. Amazing to talking about your products and skincare. So once you received that small batch, did you achieve the results you were hoping for for your own skin?

Albina Mastrangelo:

That's a very good question. Let me first tell you how this product was formulated, because the ingredients to me they were outstanding and they were fresh and natural. I remember in my recipe I had ingredients like chamomile, because, you know, chamomile helps with the skin irritation, had the camphor because camphor is very calming. I had camphor because camphor is very calming, it's a good toner. I had tea tree because, you know, tea tree is like a topical antibiotic, a natural antibiotic compound. I also had the salicylic acid, which you know salicylic acid helps with the production of oil and helps to remove any excess of dead skin.

Albina Mastrangelo:

I also add these ingredients, which helped a lot, and there was an ingredient that I resourced through a person that I knew had a background in chemists, and this ingredient is called ACE-Net and it's a compound that fights inflammation and diminishes the formation of dead cells, because a dead cell, mixed with oil and bacteria, can create cystic acne as well. So the product became a cocktail of great ingredients and that really made a huge difference in my skin. My skin is not perfect, there is always room for improvement, but I can tell you that product brought my skin to a level that everybody noticed the difference. Nice, yeah, and my struggle with the severe acne that was covering practically my whole face was gone felt that my clientele got so interested in finding out about it that they wanted to have the same products for their kids and even for people that were experiencing adult acne. So that's when I became so excited about creating more products and getting other products on the market that will help people with so many other concerns.

Janet Walker:

That's an incredible story, really amazing. And before we talk a little bit more about your skincare line, I know that you also have a background in health and nutrition as a coach, and part of having healthy skin is having a healthy lifestyle. So what are some of the important lifestyle habits that can help us maintain healthy skin?

Albina Mastrangelo:

That is a great question. See, taking care of your skin is more than just having the right product. It's like you said it's building a very good lifestyle and creating good daily routines that will help your skin from inside out. Things like caring. I'm just going to be telling you what I do. Maybe that will help your listeners to understand the things that they can do to make a difference from inside out.

Albina Mastrangelo:

As you know, water is so important to drink every day, and good habits like carrying a water bottle with you and sip throughout the day, or infuse your water with the lemon, with the cucumber, so even with berry for a refreshing twist to the water, it's a nice way to drink water regularly. For me also, using a sunscreen is a non-negotiable, but you still need to receive vitamin D from the sunlight sunlight. So even spending 10-15 minutes outdoor, it's so important to get your level of vitamin d high to a point where your skin will benefit from it. See, stay consistent with your routine. Keeps the the skin radiant. A healthy diet for healthy skin is so important, so plan meals with the skin-loving ingredients and then create a good sleeping routine. Set a consistent bedtime and wind down with calming activity like reading or listening to soothing music is essential. Avoid the screen at least one hour before bed to prevent blue light disruption is very important. I use a silk pillowcase to even minimize friction on my skin and I try journaling and deep breathing exercise to de-stress myself, not only during the day, but I make a habit of doing that and also going to bed 30 minutes early to input all these good wind-down habits.

Albina Mastrangelo:

I also engage in hobbies that help me to relax, like painting, gardening and dancing. I love dancing. I go at least once per week and I always find activity to explore with friends at least once or twice per month. I listen to uplifting podcasts like yours, janet. Thank you, your podcasts are so outstanding. Learning is so important and taking care of yourself and your skin, you have to surround yourself with the positive, uplifting people. Energy is contagious and always engage with people that uplift you rather than drain you and that can make a huge difference in yourself, which your skin is the mirror of what's going on inside of you. Exercise, finding activity that genuinely brings joy, like walking, yoga, swimming it's so important.

Janet Walker:

I find this fascinating that when we think about how we're going to care for our skin, we start by thinking about okay, what products are we going to use to clean it, to moisturize it? Okay, well, you know, sunscreen, even drinking a lot of water? We've heard that, but to me it's just incredible how all these other life factors that you've been speaking about, all these other bedtime routines and taking care of our bodies inside and out, impacts our skin. I don't think people realize that. I didn't realize that.

Albina Mastrangelo:

It's incredible Absolutely Even cutting down alcohol. It's important. I'm Italian, I love my wine and I don't mind having occasionally a nice glass of wine. We used to make wine back home. I would love to drink wine with my meal every day, but I understand wine can be inflammatory. But I try to have herbal tea at night. I try to have a healthy habit like meditation, mindfulness teas. Sticking to a good skincare routine is so important.

Janet Walker:

So this full body approach to skincare is going to have the benefit of actually improving many other things in your life your gut if you're eating, well, you know your heart if you're exercising. So taking care of your biggest organ, which is your skin, is going to take care of all the other organs in your body. It's really an interesting approach to skincare. Before we move away from talking about healthy lifestyle for skin, you mentioned healthy diet. What would be a good, healthy diet for our skin?

Albina Mastrangelo:

That's an interesting question because there are so many ingredients that will improve your skin from inside out and, in my opinion, the best diet for healthy, glowing skin is to have in your daily food ingredients like omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, walnuts, chia seeds. All these ingredients will help to hydrate the skin and reduce inflammation. Also, antioxidants like berries, leafy greens, citrus fruits like oranges, has great vitamin C. All this will protect premature aging of the skin and will boost even collagen production. Proteins, rich food, are so important as well. Like I, eat a lot of eggs, grass-fed meat. If you are a vegetarian, maybe opt for legumes. Obviously, be aware of the lectin. Obviously be aware of the lectin, but all those ingredients will support your skin.

Albina Mastrangelo:

Collagen, will support regeneration of the skin, will help to repair your skin. Healthy fats are so important, like avocado, nuts, free-range butters, extra extra virgin coconut butter, extra virgin olive oil, the Mediterranean diet use it a lot. Even seeds omega-3 supplement. If you don't have a lot of those oils, then the right supplements will help to maintain skin elasticity and will help to maintain the moisture of the skin. Obviously, water. Like I said, if you don't drink enough water, try to have cucumbers, watermelon, celery. There is a lot of water in those items that will create plumpness and will make your skin more radiant. Your skin more radiant. Even collagen boosting food like bone broth. If you cannot put good collagen in your coffee every day, which I do, that then have bone broth. Sip on bone broth on a daily base. Even some cottage cheese will provide essential amino acid for the skin elasticity.

Albina Mastrangelo:

Green tea Green tea is packed with the polyphenol, the fight-free radicals, and also protect against some damage. So herbal tea is so important. And let's not forget dark chocolate, because a chocolate to me, if you choose dark, high quality chocolate, you get so many flavonoids. That helps to improve hydration and circulation. Also, coffee Some people don't drink coffee and I understand that, but for me, having a cup of coffee, but for me, having a cup of coffee, it's so important and I know it's full of antioxidants. Obviously, in my opinion and I know there is sensitivity to some stimulants, but they are also full of antioxidants, yes. So diet it's so important, just to be careful, because you need to learn that some other foods can cause a lot of problem on the other hand.

Janet Walker:

You know, what's interesting is that not too long ago I interviewed Dr Stephen Gundry. He's a well-known name. He's sort of the guru of diet for gut health and brain health, and all of the things that you mention are good foods for your skin, like polyphenols and grass-fed meats and all these other things were the same things that he talked about and that are in his book the Gut-Brain Paradox. So I guess science is sort of catching up to the idea that this good food list takes care of not only your gut, not only your brain, but even your skin and even reducing inflammation for your whole body Exactly, in reducing inflammation for your whole body, exactly.

Albina Mastrangelo:

Inflammation plays a huge role in premature skin, in acne and in skin sensitivity. That's why I always say stay away from processed food. They're high in preservatives, they're high in refined oil and they cause inflammation. Sugar, simple carbohydrates, will cause a spike in blood sugar and will lead in breakout of collagen, which is so important for your skin and already decrease as we age. Alcohol dehydrates the skin and disrupts the natural process to repair. Even dairy. If you eat the wrong dairy product and you abuse cheese and you abuse, you know, even the wrong yogurts, because a lot of those yogurts on the market they have a high level of sugar that can trigger hormonal imbalance. It can contribute to irritation of your skin, to acne.

Janet Walker:

So it's really important to read labels and look for those low sugar products. Even in the dark chocolate. Look for the ones that don't have added sugar. Important.

Albina Mastrangelo:

Yes, simplicity is the best thing to look for Ingredients that you can pronounce, ingredients that you can understand.

Janet Walker:

You talked about quite a few of the ingredients in your products. What are a couple of the key ingredients and how are they sourced?

Albina Mastrangelo:

Great question. See, for me it's important to have purity and effectiveness in the product, so I try to naturally source ingredients. I like to use ingredients that they're botanical, that they have essential nutrients and also scientifically backed up. I use ingredients like vitamins, protein, anti-aging amino acids. We use collagen, elastin. We use essential emollients, lipids, aha, which is alpha hydroxy acid. That's like a lactase acid. I don't know if you are aware that Cleopatra used to bath in milk. They didn't know why, but that was because of the lactose acid in the milk. My grandmother used to bath me in wine, which I thought she was crazy, and that's because the tartaric acid in grapes keeps your skin healthy. Lemon has a citric acid, so you know all this. Aha acids that come from fruits are very good.

Albina Mastrangelo:

The hyaluronic acid is so excellent for your skin. There is a place in Japan that everybody seems to stay young and they realize that that was actually the hyaluronic acid in their food that they were eating every day. They kept their skin young. So we have a plant-based hyaluronic. It's an excellent ingredient because it will plump the skin. After the age of 50, we lose about 50% of our elasticity. Therefore, hyaluronic acid, it's excellent because it plumps up the skin. If you look at kids when they're really small, they have those cute cheeks and that's because they have so much hyaluronic acid in their skin. So it's important to apply daily and hyaluronic acid.

Albina Mastrangelo:

We have animal base and we have plant base. Animal base comes from the comb of the rooster and we have a plant base coming from the tamarind, which is an exotic fruit. So our ingredients are natural and healthy and they help to hydrate, to repair and rejuvenate the skin. We use jojoba oil, lemon, lime, citric acid as a preservative. And I have to say another thing that I think that's a standout for me that I'm so proud for my skincare. We have a system, a technology which we call a liposomal lecithin delivery system. That is a microscopic capsule. Think about microscopic capsules. They transport active ingredients deep into the skin, ensuring the effectiveness and the absorption of the ingredients. That is amazing. And this delivery system, it's incorporated in the product. That's why I'm so proud of our skincare line the product.

Janet Walker:

That's why I'm so proud of our skincare line Wonderful. So from that first product, that anti-acne gel, your product line is now extensive. On your website, I counted at least 15 skin and hair products, from facial and acne products to skin repair and body lotion, and even a conditioning shampoo. What was it that inspired you to create such an extensive product line?

Albina Mastrangelo:

So, yes, the reason why, janet, is because I got so excited about the results I got of my skin. I wanted to learn and grow more and I wanted to help others with the skin concern, and I'm aging as well, so I wanted to keep my skin healthier and youthful. I wanted to create product that will tackle different range of concern, like loss of elasticity, dullness, inflammation like loss of elasticity, dullness, inflammation and that was the reason why I looked into creating anti-aging products and that's when my anti-aging kit was born, where I prioritize powerful ingredients that made the difference on the skin.

Janet Walker:

Well, I know that just in the short time that I've been with you, you've been having so many clients in and out and phone calls. People love your products and they use them time and time again. It's not a one-time purchase, so I've seen for myself. People love your products.

Albina Mastrangelo:

Yes, I put high quality, effective ingredients at the forefront to deliver real result, because I know how hard it can be when you struggle with the conditions that impact your life, and I know that these days, like I'm in my late 50s now how important it is to feel confident and to walk with your head high, because every day, people sometimes they look at you and, based on the way you look, they create an opinion of you. So I was really interested in creating products that makes a difference.

Janet Walker:

Well, I was so inspired when I heard your story and so excited that you were willing to let me come to Canada and talk to you, and you even gave me a couple products which I've been using the last couple days. They are amazing. So once I go back to the US, am I still going to be able to get your products? Do you sell them strictly in Canada or do you also ship to the United States?

Albina Mastrangelo:

I ship it everywhere Whoever needs a product. That is simple and, I believe, effective. I love to send the product and I will do my best to make sure they have it anywhere in the world.

Janet Walker:

That's wonderful. Well, you know, albina, normally I do not do personal testimonials when I interview someone that produces products, but I will say that when it comes to facial cleansers, I'm pretty careful. I have decent skin, I have nice skin that I try to protect, and I have tried facial cleansers from just mild soaps to quite expensive products, and I always find that they'll clean my skin, but my eyes will burn if I don't tightly shut my eyes. Your skin cleanser since I've been using it this last few days, not only does it really cleanse my skin and even take off my makeup, but it doesn't burn my eyes. I couldn't believe how much I loved that product. Albina, we're out of time today, although I can continue talking to you for another hour. In fact, we talked a little bit about your reflexology and some of the other services, so I'm hoping that we could have you back for another episode at some point in the future.

Albina Mastrangelo:

Yes, janet, I'm so happy that you came and see me today. I'm really grateful and I would love to talk about reflexology in the future, because it's such an incredible treatment and modality that can help so many of your listeners. Thanks again for coming. I really appreciate you and I hope to see you again.

Janet Walker:
